The territory of Sicily is mostly mountainous and hilly. Along the Tyrrhenian side there is the chain dell'Appennino Siculo, formed by three mountain systems: the Peloritani, the Nebrodi and Madonie. The Mediterranean area is characterized by wide plateaus. At the heart of the mountains is Trevano Erei and, in the south, the mountains Iblei, whose peaks do not exceed a thousand meters in height. The supply side is dominated dall'Etna Ion, which with its 3323 m is the highest active volcano in Europe. Plains occupy only a fifth of the Sicilian territory. The most important are the Conca D'Oro, near Palermo, and the Plain of Catania, at the foot of Etna. The rivers are short, often torrential character: real rivers are the Simeto, the Salso, the Alcantara and Platani. The coast, high and jagged on the Tyrrhenian Sea, are low on the southern side.
Sicily is surrounded by archipelagoes and islands of the Aeolian islands (with the two active volcanoes of Stromboli and Vulcano), the Egadi the Pelagie, Pantelleria and Ustica
