Molise is one of the smallest regions of Italy. Its territory is still wonderfully intact, with rounded hills, clay hills, plains and arid and barren badlands (deep furrows in the soil caused by erosion of the clay).
THE TERRITORY
In the south-western region of the Apennines is Sannita that gradually lowers toward the coast without ever becoming a real plain. The rivers, torrential character, are thrown on the Adriatic (the Volturno, which was founded on the high molise, flowing towards the Campania). The short coastline is sandy, low and straight.
